I’ve had a lot of friends asking me lately about my cell service. I haven’t (technically) used Verizon or any of the BIG companies in quite a few years. At least five. And when I hear the prices people pay so they can stare at their phones looking for something better in their lives while their kids are playing basketball, I wonder why they’re willing to spend so much to miss out on something they’ll never, ever get from a phone.
But that’s another story…
Here’s an email I sent to my sister-in-law, one of the people wondering why she has a phone bill in the hundreds, when my family of four has never spent more than $100 a month. We’ve never felt deprived in any way, either.
I don’t like anything about Verizon at all, especially the cost.
There are two options for you.
If you are tied to your iPhone and don’t want to switch to an Android phone, then you should look into PagePlusCellular.com. They use Verizon’s network, but it’s monthly plans only. Julia has a $29 plan and gets unlimited text and 1500 minutes talk, with 1 gb of data. For $39 you get everything unlimited (I think). I’ve had pageplus for a few years and always had good service. I switched last year to go with Republic Wireless.
But, again, the only reason I recommend pageplus is if you have to use an iPhone.
Otherwise, if you’re okay with an Android phone (which is what I use) then I highly recommend Republic Wireless. They use their own technology so the phone runs on WiFi when it’s available, then switches to cell/data when you’re not on WiFi. That’s how they make it so much cheaper than Verizon.
I pay $15 a month because I use less than 1/2 GB of data/month. Since I’m always on WiFi no matter where I go, it’s fine. (The cost is actually $18 a month but I get a refund each month when I don’t use all my data!)
But I don’t think the plan I’m on is offered any longer. They have newer plans where you get 1 GB of data for $20 (+calling and text unlimited). That’s a real good plan unless you blow through data for some reason. But you can bump up from there … it’s still cheap even with more data.
For the phones on Republic…
If you have Amazon Prime you can get the Moto G Play for $99 (it’ll have Amazon ads when the phone is locked, like on a Kindle). Otherwise, if you don’t have Prime or don’t want the ads, it’s still only $150 for the phone so a pretty good deal.
https://www.amazon.com/Moto-Play-4th-gen-Lockscreen/dp/B01KBH547A (as of December 6, 2016 it looks like these are on back order!)
I like my Mac and Apple but I’m not willing to pay (up front or over time) for an iPhone when I can get an Android phone that does everything the iPhone does for 1/4 the price.
If you can go without the iPhone you should check out RepublicWireless.com. You can even try a phone with a new number and see if you like it. If you like it, you can add your present number to it. If you don’t like it, you have 30 days to return the phone and get rid of the service.
Hope this helps,
